Botanical Illustration workshop Sold Out/Wait List
What did Beatrix Potter and Charles Darwin have in common? Aside from their accomplishments as writers, both were also artists and botanists! The art of botanical illustration combines artistic skill, attention to details, and horticultural knowledge and, prior to the invention of photography, it was the only way of visually recording the world's many species of plant life.

Join artist and Huntley Meadows Park naturalist Margaret Wohler to learn how drawing can be a tool to learn about the natural world with a focus on local plants. In this workshop we will learn a bit about the history of scientific illustration, how to set up a field sketch page, and some basic drawing techniques. Then, we'll spend an hour in guided practice with River Farm's abundance of plants as our subjects. Sharpen your pencil and sharpen your observational skills through drawing!

Please bring your own sketch book and art supplies. Beginners may purchase a field art kit for $25 (contains a bound sketch book, set of 12 watercolor pencils, eraser, sharpener and drawing pencil) at the workshop.

The workshop will take place outdoors, under our spacious, airy tent. Each participant will be seated at his/her own 6ft. table to ensure safe distancing. All participants will be required to wear masks .
