Indigo Block Print workshop
Have fun learning how to create repeated design prints on fabric using an all-natural indigo dye paste! First, you will learn the process of designing and making your own relief block, or stamp, and then how to use a thickened indigo paste as an 'ink' to create beautiful prints on fabric. Next, you'll learn how to use the fix bath that bonds the paste to the fabric, and how to put the indigo through the classic "reduction" process, so that it is permanent and colorfast. Last you'll be shown how to dip your prints in an indigo vat, which will reveal rich layers of blue and add depth and dimension to your design. A tote bag or small drawstring pouches will be provided to each student, however, participants are welcome to bring their own t-shirts or any other fabric they'd like to try printing on.

Instructor Gretchen Schermerhorn is currently the Artistic Director at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, an art center dedicated to the contemporary creation of hand printmaking, papermaking and the art of the book, in Hyattsville, Maryland. She received her MFA in Printmaking from Arizona State University, and since then has completed artist residencies at The Women's Studio Workshop in New York, Columbia College Center for Book and Paper in Chicago, Seacourt Print Workshop in Northern Ireland, California State University and the Robert Rauschenberg Residency in Florida. Her prints, installations, and works on paper works have been exhibited around the country and internationally, and her work is part of the Montgomery County Public Art Trust, Anne Arundel Community College's print collection, and the Janet Turner Print Collection. She has received individual artist awards from both the Maryland State Arts Council and the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County.

The workshop will take place outdoors at River Farm, under our spacious, airy tent. Each participant can be seated at his/her own 6ft. table to ensure safe distancing. All participants will be asked to wear masks to comply with the governor's Forward Virginia guidelines.
