Natural Dyeing with Sylvia DeMar
At this time of the year, the garden is full of color. Did you know that thousands of natural materials, from the marigolds and dahlias that you grow to the avocado pits and carrot stems that you compost, contain naturally-occurring pigments? These pigments can be used to dye fabric, yarn, and even paper. Natural dyeing is a wonderful and fascinating way to learn about the hidden colors in nature and to produce unique and eco-conscious pieces for your wardrobe.

Join us for a workshop to learn about, and create color with natural, botanical materials. Sylvia DeMar, a frequent instructor with the Alexandria Art League, will share some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing and the wide array of plants that produce color. She will lead a demonstration of the process of preparing a dye bath, then guide participants in dyeing their own pieces. Attendees will have the opportunity to create two scarves - one silk and one cotton - dyed with plant materials found at River Farm.
